La Palina Red Label Toro 4.5 Star Rating
By: tuck0411 (Today at 03:57 PM)
Humidor time: 144 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 61, foot - 56
Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a slightly spicy retro and notes of charred wood, coffee, leather, spice, and a hint of red pepper. The spice in the nose faded quickly with the other flavors mellowing a bit through the first third but otherwise staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful with just enough spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: Got a 10-pack of these from Cigar Page when they were having a sale awhile back. Similar smoke to the Black Label stick I reviewed the other day with both having a hint of red pepper in the profile, which is a flavor I don't get too often, so the guess is that both sticks use some of the same tobacco.  Whatever the case, I like it, and will enjoy smoking up the rest of these along with the Black Labels.  Good smokes.  (32/35)

Semi firm, dark brown wrapper, no veins & decent oils.  PLA aging chicken barn wood; PLT old wood; PLD moderately firm.  A fairly easy toast & light, a moderate draw, a mostly even burn & a wood & earth smoke.  First notes are wood, earth, a bit of coffee bean & a light floral & herbal spice note.  The wood gets a bit perfume-y in the 1st 1/3 & the flavor strength is medium.  Faint hints of cocoa join in the 2nd 1/3 & the perfume eases.  The final 1/3 is all wood with hints of coffee & earth, & the florals & cocoa are faint on the finish.  The body is medium.  A good smoke but I didn't find it that similar to the real thing.

Connecticut Shade with some punch. Agefillers round out the richness of the wrapper to provide a rich and creamy flavor with spice. Excellent construction that provides a smooth draw and burn. Overall this is a really good cigar.

Humidor time: 143 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 56, foot - 50
Appearance and construction: A couple minor veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of mild tobacco. The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of light wood, spice, and a hint of butter.  The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very flavorful with a bit more body than your average conny blend and plenty of spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling on my shirt just past 1" in leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: This one came from the Privada CC shop when they were having a sale awhile back. Another regional cigar club offering and a fine one it was with both flavors and construction checking all the right boxes. It's a Nicaraguan puro and probably with all or most of the ingredients from Aganorsa. Would definitely smoke this one again. (32/35)

Semi firm, dark wrapper, no veins & quite oily.  PLA sweet earth & faint cocoa; PLT musty earth; PLD moderate.  A fairly easy toast & light, a moderate draw, a somewhat wavy burn, & an earth & wood smoke.  Opening notes are slightly tannic leather, bitter coffee bean, a touch of earth & only a little black pepper in mouth & retro.  The strength is upper medium.  The sharpness leaves the flavors right away leaving a mellow palate.  There is little in changes, though, up to the 1/2 when some wood notes join,  The wood takes on some char in the final 1/3 & the finish is wood, leather, earth & little spice.  The body is upper medium,  Not the original.

Humidimeter reading: Head - 67, foot - 59
Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, black coffee, charred wood, leather, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing just slightly through the first third but otherwise staying consistent throughout. Very tasty, overall, with just enough spice and a very rich aspect to keep things interesting and right in my wheelhouse throughout. Strength was in the medium/full range. (33/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Things were then very uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: This was another stick I got from the Privada CC shop when they were having a sale awhile back. It's from another regional cigar club that's loosely affilated with Privada but no clues are provided as to where they're at and there are also no clues provided as to who makes this stick or what the blend is. If I had to guess, it's probably a Nicaraguan stick with tobacco from that country (and maybe a Broadleaf wrapper of some sort) based on the strong flavors and overall profile, but who knows. Just a really good smoke on the stronger end of things and it kind of reminded me of some of Roma Craft's fuller blends. Highly recommended for anyone who likes that type of blend. (33/35)

Sweet coffee upfront notes. Traces of chocolate and honey. Decent draw with slight construction issue in final third.
Several touch ups needed at end flavor profile got tastier at near nub. Overall pleasant experience.

A firm, dark rustic cigar, shag foot, pig-tailed cap, no veins & light oils.  PLA barn wood; PLT light wood; PLD moderate.  A quick toast & light, a moderate draw, an even burn, & a woody smoke.  Starting notes are old wood, a bit of earth & a light dose of pepper & herb spice on the tongue; more in the retro.  Once the wrapper ignites the wood picks up a bitter edge & a mineral note comes on.  The strength is medium plus.  The bitterness persists into the 2nd 1/3 when it is offset by some coffee.  The bitterness returns in the last 1/3 but is tempered by a faint floral note which follows the wood & earth in the finish.  The body is medium.  Just OK.

Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, tangy citrus, spice, and hints of black pepper and coffee. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing just slightly through the first third but otherwise staying consistent throughout. Very tasty, overall, and one of the most full-bodied habanos I think I've had.  Strength was about medium. (33/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed mostly even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn got a bit wavy through the 2nd third but self-corrected and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal throughout. (19/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC's shop when they were having a sale awhile back. What a banger of a smoke!  Flavor for days and pretty good construction, too.  I will definitely be stocking up on these next time PCC has a sale... (32/35)

A fairly firm, oily, medium brown stick, no veins.  PLA soft earth & wood; PLT light wood; PLD airy.  An easy toast & light & draw, an even burn, & a slightly mineral-ly smoke.  Opening flavors are earth, wood, a bit of molasses & a little black pepper in mouth & nose.  Strength is medium plus.  The flavors mellow in the 1/3, the molasses fades & the wood turns mixed & a tad sweet.  Some coffee bean joins the wood & earth in the 2nd 1/3.  The wood & earth embolden in the last 1/3 & there are hints of leather.  The coffee is black & more noticeable.  The finish is earthy & less sweet.  The body is medium plus.  An enjoyable stick.
