The Briar Patch has recently acquired a phenomenal estate pipe collection totaling nearly 300 pipes. Generally, the pipes in this collection are in excellent condition. About 20 percent of the pipes have never been smoked. The pipes that have been smoked have been fully refurbished, including sterilizing, polishing and reaming when needed. $35 and up.

At the price of a good pipe, I see why I choose cigars.

Maybe one day...........

I don't know about that ... doing the math, it seems to me that pipe smoking is usually less expensive than cigars, all things considered

Once you make the one time investment in a good pipe it is actually quite a bit less expensive.

One 2 ounce tin of excellent tobacco which will allow me 18 to 25 bowls at 1 1/2 to 2hrs per bowl costs 7 to 12 dollars.

The initial purchase of the pipe will cost you some money, but the tobacco is much cheaper. If you buy a basic pipe like me then it can be a very affordable hobby.

There are some really nice pipes on that site. Some a really good prices too.

The pipe is a one-time purchase, and the tobacco is - for the most part - cheap when compared to cigars, so you make the cost of the pipe back over time. Some people like to have more than one pipe, but that is a personal thing. Someone that can afford 300 of them clearly has unusual priorities or lots of money. For me, I am very happy with my Peterson 312. I may purchase a cheap cob sometime just to experience it. The meerschaum pipe I posses was a gift.

Since I just bought a pipe to try it out,I can tell you that in the long run, pipe smoking will be cheaper. I bought a pipe, 29.99, a 2 ounce bag of tobacco and a tamper tool at the same shop for a little over 11 bucks. So that is a little less than $50. The 2 ounce bag od tobacco will last in my assumptions the same amount of time as about 10-15 cigars.

I am doing it as a price break to the wallet on the cigars as well as something different to try. So far I like it. I nave smoked about 4 bowls through my pipe now and it just gets better each time.

I understand the initial cost. Some of those pipes were going for $500. to $700. That's like a box or two of ultra high end cigars which I can't afford either.

In a perfect world, I'd be able to afford that set of Savinelli freehands. Clearly this is not a perfect world.

Indeed, sometimes I'm not sure I really want to participate in this world...

While we're serving whine with out cheese about how expensive cigars and pipes are, let's have a moment of silence for:

The sorry bastard and his poor wife who both smoke two packs of Marlboro Lights a day an pay $180 a week -- nearly $10,000 a year -- for the privilege.

The poor BOTL who spends easily $200-$300 a month on cigars *AND* $200-$300 a month on cigarettes. God pity him if his wife also smokes.

And here I thought I was nuts with the (comparatively) few pesos I have invested in my vices.

How big a pipe are you smoking, I rarely get more than about an hour and fifteen min. out of mine...

Seems like a few ounces of pipe tobacco go a long way and are pennies compaired to a good cigar. I can't give up cigars, but I do supplement with the pipe.

Put away my pipes for the summer but will pull them out for the winter. No a bowl doesn't last as long but when its cold out who wants to sit for an hour, also the wife doesn't mind the smell of a pipe in the vehicle so if its raining I have another option.
Pipes I have found are a personal thing, they may look great but don't feel right when you start using them, the 5 or 6 I rotate took a long time to find. Don't spend a lot of money on one till you are sure what fits you best, and that can cost as much as a few boxs of good cigars.
Oh, my favorite pipe is a Mastro Beraldi rusticated half bend.
