I was under the impression that the Arrow program was scrapped as a political campaign stunt. At best it was canceled because the Canadian budget could not support both NORAD and Arrow, especially since nuclear missiles were more of a concern than russian bombers in 1958.

Some say the Avro was scrapped because it had such advanced capabilities for the time that it scared the crap out of the Americans.  Considering almost every scrap of paper associated with the program was destroyed, and very few people talk about it, it's hard to know ... but budgets certainly played into it.

Very true all, I stand corrected. The Avro Arrow prototypes did actually fly. For some reason the only images of Canadian military aviation that I can conjure stem from a bad movie with Dan Akroyd. ;-)

Yes, it flies that's when its attached to the side of a building but its built in the U.S.....but for real its a very sad story of Canadian aviation history, yes the Avro was at the time a kick ass plane and was designed by Canada and so were the engines which were called Iroquois and also built here. The States took displeasure at this since it was at time better then anything the U.S had at the time and Boeing wanted us to buy their stuff etc. The States wanted it scrapped and threatened Diefenbaker our PM (crazy guy talked to his dog thought it was his dead wife) at the time and it was the end of it.

However, you ask where did all the engineers go.....um NASA guess who helped design the lunar modules and other space crap....our guys so the U.S won be one scrapping the project and two getting our engineers.....we call it the brain drain which still occurs today....Engineers, Doctors, Scientists, Nurses etc....so this is our plan to Canuackinize you all.

So far its working....Captain Kirk, Rush, Shaina Twain, Avril Lavigne, Wayne Gretzky, The TDBank, Lumber Industry, Equinox & Terrain GM CUVs, our Water (you don`t want to know whats in it), Hockey 90 percent are you quessed it Canaucks.

So beware more are coming :-0
