Storing pipes?

Is it necessary to store your pipes a certain way after smoking?  Like get or build a pipe stand or something?  Right now, I'm just throwing them in an old cigar box after cleaning them.  What are the problems I'm going to run into if I don't store them on a pipe stand afterwards?
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." Mostly the only thing I will say, if you're storing them in a cigar box, it to perhaps leave the lid open at least part way, so that they can air out a bit better, otherwise the only other thing might be a few scuffs from laying around in the box.  Outside of that , I don't see much problem...

I don't do anything special for storage, other than making sure they can breathe. I will note that if you leave your pipe(s) in the open - on a pipe rack or somesuch - you may want to clean and polish them every month or two. House dust does not generally make a good complement to burning tobacco.

After cleaning I leave them out on their pipe stand and I lately I've been leaving a pipe cleaner in them over night to help suck up some of the excess moisture I didn't get when cleaning.

Mine sit in a little stand on top of one of my humidors.  Years ago, Dad and I used to take our pipes up to Edward's and they'd buff 'em for us.  I'm not sure they used some sort of wax on the polishing wheel, but I don't know what it was.  We also used to use that Bee Pipe Sweetener stuff every now and then.  Some folks use rum, but it was hard to find in a Baptist household.    The key is to empty them when you're done with a bowl and alternate pipes if you can.

Like many old timers, I've always stored my pipes with the stems pointing up in a pipe rack after cleaning them out well with a pipe cleaner after smoking.

I never leave a pipe cleaner in them as I like to let them air out in the pipe rack as-is (although some prefer Bryan's method -- see above) -- I guess it depends a lot on how many pipes you have in your smoking rotation and your personal preferences.

I agree with David -- I use high proof rum or whatever on a pipe cleaner once in a while (or that "Bee" stuff in the small yellow plastic bottle works too) to sweeten up a pipe.

I never use wax or any other foreign substance on the bowl of a pipe -- I like to keep that completely natural.
