Sorry guys know this is a little of site topic. But have noticed several of you on here discussing pipe smoking. There are alot of times during my day when there just isn't time for a cigar but a pipe would come in handy.

Is there anybody willing to take a little time and point me in the right direction as far as first pipe, how many pipes, good tobaccos to start with and reputable sites to deal with?

Would really appreciate any help you guys can give.

Thank you,
Jeff

hey man... there are lots of threads you might find helpful in the "pipe geeks" forum, this thread in particular has alot of info you seem to be looking for: http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=10681.0

i think this page is also filled with good advice for starting out: http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Pipe_Packing_and_Smoking_techniques

as far as good tobaccos to start with... i hesitate to just throw recommendations out there, since my favorites might taste like crap to you. perhaps just pick up a sampler and give lots of things a try.

i've had great experiences with these retailers:

http://www.pipesandcigars.com/
http://www.marscigars.com/
http://www.4noggins.com/

hope that helps

Yeah, what sam a said! As he mentioned there are many pipe smokers here and I'm sure they will flood you with everything you need to know. I keep threatening to pick up a corn cob pipe but haven't acted on that impulse yet.

You need to - it is a nice change of pace from cigars.

Sam has you covered, but as a relative pipe newbie, I've enjoyed my corn cob.  They are cheap, so if you decide you don't like the hobby, you aren't out a lot of money.

Thanks guys. The Mad Professor should have copied and posted that into an article! Very well thought out thorough and along with your guys advice I'm heading to the local B&M. Mine here the entire south wall of their humi about 35' is all pipe tobacco etc.

So sometime tonight I will have a corncob pipe sticking out my mouth and trying my first bowl of tobacco. Hope you guys don't mind if I pick your brains a little more as I go cause like I said cigars I know fairly well. Pipes I know which end your mouth goes on and what end burns  :shy:

I bet you will find it quite enjoyable.  I puff on a pipe at work sometimes cuz it's easier to manage than a cigar.  You can pick how much tobacco you want to smoke and if you have to put it down, you're out a few cents worth of bacy instead of half of a 8 buck cigar.  I agree that the corncob is the best starter for ya.  As for tobacco, it sounds like you'll have a good selection at your b & m to choose from.  Most of the time, they have the big jars of it, so you can get a few ounces of different blends.
Good luck, I bet you'll have fun.

Thanks for the link! I'm about 98% sure I will like a pipe and now is seeming like it's alot less expensive to get started so definitely pulling the trigger today. Once again thanks guys.

Know it not strictly on topic but has anyone ever thought about a Pipe Section in the forums? Not to water down the site but from the sounds of it with so many cigar/pipe smokers sounds kind of logical to me. I mean there is no way pipe or no pipe I'm gonna give up my cigars but I like it here not going to go hunting for pipe sites right now.

Thanks guys,
Jeff

Well all I just smoked a pipe for my very first time! And I'm screwed! Loved it. Went to my local B&M Sean helped me pick out 3- 2oz pouches of tobacco and since I had a $15 credit coming at me anyway he picked out a 3 way tool for me and gave me a La Rocca pipe for free  :dancing:

Got 2oz of each Ambrosia (pretty good stuff), Colonial and Kentucky Bourbon. Were the Edwards house blends but gave me a good deal at $5 per. Bought $120 of cigars too one of the reasons he was so generous

Now I guess it's just experimenting for what I want to smoke!

Welcome to the fold! There's nothing quite like a good pipe. Except maybe a good cigar :-)
