Must Try Tobaccos

After looking on here for a while I went out and bought a Missouri Meerschaum and a pouch of Captain Black White. I understand that it's not the best tobacco but I was always attracted to a pipe because of the sweet smoke. Anyways, what blends of tobacco would you reccomend?

I just got back into pipes after a 20 year hiatus.  The more learned pipe smokers around here have mentioned brands/blends I've never heard of.  I prefer an "aromatic" tobacco as opposed to a more straight tobacco blend.  My suggestion would be to take your pipe to your local tobacconist and talk to them.  Unless things are different in your neck of the woods, if you talk with them, they'll generally toss you together something to try on the house and try to tailor a blend for your tastes.  My Dad and I both had our own blends on file with the local Edwards franchise back in the day.  Until you get around to doing that, jump on this:  http://www.pipeshowonline.net/Request_Altadis.php.  I'm still working on the two tins (I had a friend order the second) I got through that link.  The blends I got were "Molto Dulce" and "Tabac Noir".  Both are quite good IMHO.

And the Captain Black stuff is decent enough in a pinch, although the last pouch I bought from Walgreens was dry.  I tossed a humipak in it for a couple of days and it was fine.  I remember buying several "mail-order" pipes from them at $12.95+S&H back in the day.  They were nice enough pipes that I paid to have a new bit put in one at twice what I paid for the pipe...

I rarely smoke aromatics these days, but when I do I prefer the ones that McClelland makes.  Tastemaster is probably my favorite of the bunch, but Mellow Mack is also pretty tasty.  If you're looking for something super-smooth, try Captain Cool.  It's much too mild for my current tastes, but I really enjoyed it when I was first getting into pipe smoking.

In terms of non-aromatics, I really like the following (in no particular order):

- Westminster by G.L. Pease (English blend)
- Frog Morton by McClelland (Virginia/Latakia blend)
- Escudo Navy Deluxe (Virginia/Perique flake)
- Grand Orientals: Classic Samsun by McClelland (Virginia/Oriental blend)
- Bullseye, Navy and Twist Flakes by Stokkebye
- Blakeney's Best Bayou Slice by McClelland (Virginia/Perique flake)

There are many others I've enjoyed, but these are the ones I go back to most often.

My current favorite is Rattray's Old Gowrie, but I'm pretty inexperienced.  I've found this website very helpful, but keep in mind that there tends to be a bias to non-aros:

I've only been buying bulk stuff at the moment, because of the price difference. Bulks sell for $3.50-$4.75 per ounce and the tins (2 ounces) sell for $14-$18 dollars. WA state taxes the hell out of the tins. Plus vendors like PipesandCigars.com won't ship pipe tobacco to WA state because of some stupid state law.

If you like aromatics Mac Baren has a good one called Seven Sea's. I've smoked the Royal blend and it's good. I like Capt Black but the Seven Sea's is better.

Thanks. I will definitely try the Frog Morton because I've read reviews and heard from a lot of people and the general consensus is that it is very good. Also, I really like the smell of the aromatic blends so I will definitely try the Seven Seas.

+1 for the McClelland aromatics. They are more flavorful and true to the advertised taste than I find others (like Stokkebye). That said, I don't have a lot of experience with other brands. I have heard good things about Gawith & Hogarth (Top Black Cherry), Cornell & Diehl (Founding Fathers), and Mac Baren ... but have not yet tried any of them. Still burning through some older stuff before I purchase more.

Check out reviews at http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/
I don't put nearly as much stock in the reviews there as I do for cigars here, but it makes for some interesting reading, if you have specific brands/blends you want to research.

wish i could be of help... but i tend to stick to english/balkan blends and virginias, so really don't have alot of knowledge dealing with sweet smokes and aros. there are lots of nice sweet virginias but they are mostly just subtlety sweet and i'm not sure they are what you're looking for. i've found the few mac barens blends i've tried to be really sweet, but they bite the hell out of my tongue, its probably just a body chemistry thing... give them a shot they might be just right for you.
Any cigars portrayed in this post that appear to be Cuban in origin are completely fictional in nature. Any resemblance between these cigars and actual Cuban cigars is unintended and purely coincidental.

My favorite aromatics are Scotty's Butternut Burley  and  Boswell's No-Bite Delite, but there are so many I haven't tried yet, I'm sure to find some new favorites.

I doubt its a body chemistry thing... I've heard a lot of people say that Mac Baren bites like a rabid dog.
