I want to buy my first pipe. I'm looking at Stanwell, Peterson, and Savinelli but they're so many beautiful pipes out there. Can someone advice me on a good beginner pipe. And also I looking for a high quality aromatic tobacco. Thanks BX

As someone who has taken that plunge twice, I am going to give you my advice.  Try starting with a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob.  They are cheap, so if you decide pipe smoking isn't for you, there is no big loss.  I started with a beautiful briar, and I wish I hadn't.  I've had much more success with the MM.

As for aromatics, I've never tried one.  I've found plenty of non-aros to keep me busy.

I understand and respect what you're saying maybe I'll look in to a corn cob but I still want to get a nice briar.

There are a lot of folks more experienced with pipes, but I started off with a Hans Christian Andersen II Smooth Pipe.  See the top two images here:

I traded it to Les (Hot Stuff x).  I don't know how much he uses it, but I liked it.

Sorry can't help you here on that but there are a few guys with tons of experience in this area.

Agree on the MM corn cob. Some think it sounds funny but you can pick one up at most of your B&M's on a rack behind the counter for less than $10 or less online. I have only been doing the pipe thing full time for just over a month and just picked up a Falcon pipe not long ago. Beauty of the Falcon is it's almost idiot proof on the smoking itself (not gonna lie still cant pack worth a crap!) the bowl itself can be replaced meaning you can buy the pipe and say 3 bowls for around $120 instead of 3 separate pipes. I like 4noggins.com for all my pipe stuff but as I said I'm not all that experienced. As for tobacco the flavors are almost limitless but the ones I like the best so far that were recommended but non aromatic are:

Cornell & Diehl Black Duck and Epiphany
McClelland Wilderness and Frog Morton pretty much everyone will tell you that the Wilderness is just stupid good. I've already burned through my first 2oz. of it.

Good luck and enjoy.

You mentioned that you're looking at Stanwell, Peterson, and Savinelli.  Those are all good choices.  I would recommend the Savinelli as a potential beginner pipe as they have good quality and reasonable pricing.  Especially in the Duca Carlo, Monza, Tevere, and Trevi lines which are some of the least expensive lines and will also serve to keep you from having too much invested if you find that it's not for you.  As for tobacco, I've not got much experience with aromatics, but the best advice I can offer is to either order some samples, or talk w/ a tobacconist at your B&M depending on what kind of offerings they have on hand...

I started off with a briar basket pipe, and recently bought a Savinelli. The Savinelli is awesome and you can find some good prices on some Savinelli pipes as low as $53.

Basket pipes are pipes that didn't meet the standards the carver or company put in place. They start out as first, but end up as seconds because either the grain is not good, there are knots in the wood, there are to many divots in the briar etc. Many smoke great and you can get them from generally $15-30.

It also has links to some simular discussions.  I think it has the answers you seek.

Thank you all for your advice. Especially 87North and metalheadycigarguy, I picked up a Savinelli monza on smokingpipes.com for $40
I also ordered McClelland Tastemaster and Mac Baren Seven Sea as suggested on the Must try tobaccos Thread. I've heard that Mac Baren burns hot but I'm willing to give it a go.  :puncher:

If you decide that pipes are for you, some of the mall-type and franchise places like Tinder Box and Edwards sell nice briar "seconds" relatively cheap.

The little store where I beer sells some small pyrex/glass pipes that the hand-written sign says are for tobacco use only...   :shades:

If you like aromatics, McClelland is good. I have read the reviews for Boswells on tobaccoreviews.com and based on the rave reviews will be picking up some of their Bear blend and Raspberry Cream and some others. See boswellpipes.com. I have not tried Mac Baren. Peter Stokkebye aromatics are not bad, but I like McClelland better.

Even though you already bought a briar, I think you should still try a cob. You may be surprised at just how nice they are to smoke.

Not experienced enough to explain why but the cob for some reason is easy and especially forgiving it seems. Which helps me alot since I'm still trying to get my packing down and consistent.

You're definitely right on about them being forgiving...  I keep on in the glove box of the truck for emergencies and such... and  smoke something in it, (usually some Kendal Kentucky) at least a couple times a week.

I have some 7 Seas Royal from Mc Baren and it's pretty good. Just puff lightly and not to fast and you'll be ok. Kyle just sent me some 7 Seas regular blend but I haven't tried it yet.

Enjoy the new pipe and happy puffing.

That is a nice looking pipe! I am looking forward to hearing how it smokes for you.  Remember, the first couple bowls may seem a bit tart until the briar starts to break in. Have fun!
