Travel pipe

Thought I would check with the pipe geeks and see if anyone has found a pipe that is good for short trips.  One of the key features must be that the pipe can be packed before leaving home without fear of losing all the 'baccy while it's bouncing around in the car.

I found this thread that talks about the aluminum bullet pipe but the bowl is real small, and the Briar cigar, but they're both pretty expensive for something that is going to get used only once in a while.

The pocket pipes are kind of cool too, but there's no lid or other way to secure the tobacco until it's ready to smoke.

I have looked for alternatives but haven't found any yet, so thought I'd ask the knowledgeable folk here for ideas.

I have a Pete outdoor pipe I stick in my pocket. I keep the fixins in a pouch.

You can use a pouch for the baccy. I us an old tubo to store the tobacco.

If you want to pre pack your pipe you can get one of those wind caps to keep the baccy in the pipe. during travel.

Those caps Kyle linked are inexpensive and work pretty well unless the pipe gets tossed around aggressively (liked knocked against things or dropped).  I live on the ocean and the wind caps are also great when smoking outside on windy days.

The caps work with most pipe bowls, but if you looking for a new travel pipe, I'd recommend something short and sturdy such as these:

There's also similar pipes and "nose warmers" in similar styles at higher and lower prices.

Savinelli also makes a relatively short and sturdy "Author" -- the 320 shape that might be suitable.

A MM corn cob might the the WTG -- if it breaks or it's lost it's more expendable.

I have 2 of the Savinelli Lolita Pipe - 01 Smooth - Apple pipes that Rich linked. They are a great 15 to 25 min smoker.
The only downfall is with the thin walls if you don't really pay attention they will smoke hot. I use mine for the 30 min. drive to work and in the tractor or combine.

I pack one metal tubo with 4 or 5 pipe fulls of tobacco and another tubo with pipe cleaners, a Czech pipe tool, and strike anywhere matches.
This system has worked well for the daly drive to work and also bouncing around in the combine and tractor all day at the farm.

And THAT is why the geeks rule. Thanks for the info guys.

I will definitely give the wind screen thingy a try.

The little Savinelli's look interesting too, but because the pipe might be lost in transit, and is going to be abused (almost certainly badly) I had to look for something cheaper. I found a couple candidates: this short little Missouri cob is definitely the right price, or for a briar maybe one of the Shorty Mini pipes from http://pipesandcigars.com/shmipica.html>this page.

Just so you know, that MM cob is really tiny.  Those mini-briars are a little bigger, but I don't think either will accommodate those wind screens -- bowls too small.

Walker Briar Works customizes a MM Meerschaum as a "Nose Warmer" with a normal-sized bowl and a "Forever" stem (the custom stem fits all MM cob pipes) for $30.  http://www.walkerbriarworks.com/html/nosewarmer.html
