Yes they were! I started school in the 50's and actually learned how to read, write, and do math without the Federal gubmint involved in any way. Got my Red Ryder BB gun with the official Red Ryder compass in the Genuine Red Ryder plastic stock and never did put my eye out! Everything started slipping downhill after that. And now we're here at the bottom of the hill.
