Davidoff makes some tinned tobaccos which are very passable. As a starter pipe, some people recommend a corncob... "Missouri Meerschaum" is a decent brand and make some non-cob pipes which are inexpensive starters.

Avoid Captain Black -- it's like smoking antifreeze!

Fun Fact:
Groucho Marx suffered from insomnia, which he claimed was due to a financial loss in the stock market. When he suffered from insomnia, he used to call people up in the middle of the night and insult them. In the 1950s Groucho was invited to take a tour of the New York Stock Exchange. While in the observation booth, he grabbed the public address system handset and began singing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady". Upon hearing silence coming from the trading floor, he walked into view, was given a loud cheer by the traders, and shouted, "Gentlemen, in 1929 I lost eight hundred thousand dollars on this floor, and I intend to get my money's worth!" For fifteen minutes, he sang, danced, told jokes, and all this time, the Wall Street stock ticker was running blank.

Try taking a look at www.tobaccoreviews.com It might seem overwhelming at first, but there is a wealth of information on that site.

im a big fan of dunhill's pipe tobaccos, especially the nightcap, mixture 965, and standard mixture medium or full. i believe they have stopped producing some of those, but if you look around you should be able to find them.

Here is a pipe starter kit from Pipes and Cigars with everything you need to get started for $30:

http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipestarterkit.html

However, the pipe in the above set is likely junk, so I recommend you start off with a corn cob pipe...they are cheap, very cool smoking and don't require any break in or special maintenance.  By a cob pipe for $5-$10  http://store.pipesandcigars.com/micocobme.html

and buy this pipe tobacco sampler for $22.50: http://www.pipesandcigars.com/stbsvaelheho.html

For a total of about $30 you'll have a cob pipe (or two) and a nice sampler to get you started.

A big nail makes a decent pipe tool.  Check youtube for videos on how to pack and smoke a pipe...can be very helpful.

I'm by no means an expert, but PM me if you have any questions or need some help.

I'm hoping to bring back some pipes when I go out to my folks' house at Christmas.  Dad quit smoking years ago.  Although he took care of his pipes, I'm sure several were put up uncleaned.  Any thoughts about fixing them up other than a gentle reaming (that just sounds dirty!  :shy: ).  The overwhelming majority are briar and were purchased at the local Edwards or Tinderbox.  I remember going with Mom when she put a $70 pipe Dad liked on layaway and that was around 1980!

There's plenty of information on the internet about restoring an old ("estate") pipe

With all of the talk on pipes I need to start that habit again.  I have two I have my eye on :

Savinelli Oscar Lucite (621) Pipes at Smoking Pipes .com

Comoy's Pipes Virgin Bent Billiard (215) Pipes at Smoking Pipes .com

Not sure which one is the better deal,,maybe somebody can give me a heads up?

Thanks

Dewey Dave

They are both decent pipes and are considered "middle of the road" as far as quality.  Personally I would prefer the Comoy's bent billiard.  I have several Savinelli's that I used to smoke on a regular basis too.

The name of the thread is "getting a pipe pipe"

Is a pipe-pipe different than a regular pipe?

You smoke weed out of it?

My father smokes a pipe a lot, and has introduced me to it.  He has tried a bunch of different pipes and has settled on Peterson. The Peterson Aran, Shannon, and Killarney lines are all very good. Dad usually smokes a Killarney now (I think it's a 221), and he gave me a Standard 312 (standard system pipe).  Peterson is probably also a bit pricey, but dad says you gets what you pays for.
