Greetings from Minnesota.  I am new to the site, have been smoking cigars for about a year now, and have a newbie question.  V-cutters: better?  Why or why not?

bstessl

Welcome from NW Indiana.  Does the V-cutter work better for you?  It's all preference, some like it, some don't.  It also depends on the size of the cigar.

Any relation to a Derick Nagy baby chance?

Welcome aboard the ship.

V Cutters.  I second bstessl.  It is preference for you.  Some like the V cut, some a punch, some a guillotine.  V cuts are tougher on torpedoes, belicosos, and pyramids and punching is almost impossible on these as well.  I have a V cutter for larger ring gauges 52 or higher just because it helps to regulate the amount of smoke I get.

Hope you enjoy your time here.  Get involved in trading, buying, selling, passes, the boards and the live herf.  There is a ton of information here from the cigars themselves (sizes, shapes, flavors, profiles) to storage, and all the way up to a huge cigar database with tons of reviews.  You just can't go wrong.

Welcome from South Florida. I agree that the type of cut is personal preference. I use both the V-cutter and guillotine, which is said to be better for larger ring cigars.

I am trying to understand the difference in the smoking experience.  I do not own one, but don't want to buy it if it doesn't make a huge difference.

There is not a Derick Nagy in my near family.  Distant relative?  Who knows?

Truthfully I have tried a few different cutters including V cut but I always end up going back to my straight guillotine cutters.

The idea of the V-cut is that it delivers a more concentrated stream of smoke to the tongue then a straight, thus allowing the smoker to get a better delivery of the flavors but I dont know how true that really is. I am like Don, a V-cut on smaller RG and anything bigger then a 52 get's a straight chop. You should try it for yourself though and see what you like, never pass up the opportunity to buy new cigars or new swag to help you smoke cigars and if you dont already have a humidor when you do start looking take what you think will be big enough and then multiply by 10.

I am not concerned about what you think as I can tell you don't do it often.

Welcome from North Carolina!   I do enjoy using a V cutter. Seems to regulate the intake better for me a least.  Enjoy your time here!

Welcome to the forum from South Jersey -  As a total noob here (and to cigars) I can't help with your question. I have an Alaska Bear guillotine cutter - and a growing collection of cigars in my humidor. Hopefully soon I'll cut my first premium cigar and try it ! Hahah- Enjoy your stay here !

A man can never have too many cutters laying around. Pick up a cheap V cutter like the Cuban Craters to see if you like it. I keep one in the trunk of the Harley for on the road use
