What's Up With "Fake" Ring Gauge Sizes?

So, my darling wife bought me a box of 4x60 mixed Tubos of Oliva Nubs. I thought they did not look like a 60 ring gauge so I measured a few of them. They were consistenly 7/8"...which amounts to a 56 ring gauge not a 60 at all. So now I was curious and took out an Oliva V Doule Robusto to measure. They consistently measured at barely 3/4"...which amounts to a whopping 48 ring gauge. Now I feel cheated!!   I suppose I could understand about a bit of shrinkage, but really, touted as a 56 and customers receive a 48, that's equal to the shrikage of a man being submerged in a cold swimming pool.

With enough humidity, I'm sure they will swell to the advertised size.

Now that I think about it, again, if they really did shrink, would not the band be sliding off? All the bands on my cigars fit perfectly. My humidity is a constant 65%. I think advertising a 54 ring gauge when it is actually a 48 is a bit too much of a discrepancy. Hmm...6/64" is only approx. 1/10"...seems like not much in the end. But when purchasing a Robusto vs. a Double Robusto, the price sure is different.

Very strange find indeed. I can honestly say I've never once measured a ring gauge or length.

I'll have to post a picture of some Padilla Vintage Reserve I bought.  They're box pressed and I swear within the same box I saw everything from 46 to 56 size...

If they did shrink, the bands would come right off, unless they have taken to gluing them to the wrapper (which, I swear, a few brands are terrible about doing).

Sounds like there is something going on to me.

This might explain why I had a hard time finding the right sizes when I was first adding a bunch of random cigars to my humidor from the database.  I'm pretty sure there were some Oliva I has an issue with as well.

I've noticed bands on a few sticks are looser after keeping them at a lower RH. Doesn't bother me though because I'm not a size queen ;)

Hmm....I don't own a caliper, however, that might not be a bad idea. Then I'll write an article here and add all the actual gauge sizes to all the brands I smoke
