Why do we sing the National Anthem before sports games?

I am not concerned about what you think as I can tell you don't do it often.

I just wish they'd sing it as written without all the extra warbling.  Actually, being a school band alumnus, I'd  or really like to see area high school bands play the Anthem than pop stars who make it all about themselves.  
Self-appointed Guru of Pass Container Sizing,  All Things Midgetly Stripperish, and general "Stirrer of the Puddin'".

Jack Black's performance before a WNBA game in LA was the greatest of all time.  Loud, proud, clear and on key, perfection.  Not draaaaaaaawn ouuuuuuuttt, and no excessive warbling etc.

I enjoy the Anthem at sporting events - I either hum the tune or move my lips because I COULDN'T CARRY A TUNE IN A BUCKET!!!!
