CAO Flathead Steel Horse Bullneck 6.5x52 4.5 Star Rating
By: tuck0411 (04/09/2024 04:51 PM)
Humidor time: 144 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 66, foot - 66
Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, an oily sheen, a flat head, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a wide-ring punch and PLD was moderately open. (9/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, black coffee, charred wood, leather, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent through the first third after which a bare hint of sweet citrus came in and stuck around for the duration with the other flavors maintaining throughout. Very tasty, overall, and pretty close to my wheelhouse for a fuller blend. Strength was about medium. (33/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their "Brian's Box" selections awhile back. I've had a few CAOs in the past, and maybe even one from this blend (don't remember and too lazy to go look...), but this has to be one of the better ones from my smoking experience. Flavor for days and excellent construction so nothing at all here to complain about. Definitely need to get more of these. (33/35)

Solid core, roundly BPd, very dark, oily wrapper, pig-tailed cap, no veins or mars.  PLA meaty earth; PLT sweet wheat & wood; PLD moderately easy.  A typical toast & light, a moderately easy draw, an even burn needing no work, & a sweet wood smoke.  Openers are sweet wood & wheat, touches of leather & earth & a fair bit of black & red pepper on palate & in retro.  Strength is near full.  Between the 1st & 2nd 1/3 traces of coffee & dark chocolate set in.  A little further in there's raisin.  The pepper fades a bit in the mouth on the back side as the wood & coffee lead.  The finish is nice & the body is near full.  A slightly toned-down version of the Corona Especial but still excellent.

Humidor time: 141 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 64, foot - 58
Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately tight. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of dark wood, coffee, spice, and a hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors quickly mellowing through the first half inch and the body receding towards medium. The dark wood became much lighter and the coffee note faded to a mere hint with the spice also receding.  This much mellower profile then stayed consistent through the remainder. Reasonably tasty, overall, but the first half inch was the most interesting with the rest of it being merely average.  Strength was about medium. (27/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. Smoke output gradually improved through the first third and reached optimal by the beginning of the 2nd third. The burn was a bit wavy but self-correcting through the first third with the ash falling past 1" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal from the 2nd third on. (17/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Small Batch as one of their COTM selections awhile back. Decent enough smoke but nothing unusual, flavor-wise, and not quite what you'd expect coming from a boutique brand like Warped.  Oh well, next... (28/35)

Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium+ profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, spice, and hints of butter and citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent through the first third after which a note of coffee gradually appeared and then stuck around through the remainder with the other flavors maintaining throughout. Very tasty, overall, and pretty close to my wheelhouse for a habano blend. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first part of the first third, then gradually got wavy prior to the first ashing at 1 1/2" which left a cone. The waviness continued into the 2nd third, then got lopsided and a touch-up was applied when it showed no signs of self-correcting. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (18/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as part of their monthly "Farm Rolled" pack awhile back. A really nice smoke, the one touch-up aside, with loads of great flavor and pretty good construction. Would definitely smoke this one again. And it comes from a tabacalera in the Dominican Republic that's run by Jochy Blanco who's sticks I've smoked before and enjoyed so no surprise that this one was as good as it was. (31/35)

Quite firm, soft BP, tan wrapper, no veins & a nice oil sheen.  PLA hint of hay & graham; PLT earth & hay; PLD moderately easy.  An easy toast, light & draw, a sharply even burn, & creamy wood.  Starters are hay, cream, wood & a touch of black pepper in mouth & retro.  The flavor strength is medium.  The 1st 1/3 is all hay & cream & a little wood.  Faint notes of coffee appear in the 2nd 1/3.  The pepper fades a bit but still has a presence.  The final 1/3 is still cream, hay & wood but the coffee picks up a bit.  The finish is woody at the start but slides down to the coffee.  The body is medium.  While not a flavor bomb it is a pleasure to smoke.

Appearance and construction: A few veins, an oily sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of charred wood, coffee, leather, spice, and a hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing just a bit through the first third with the body receding towards medium/full but otherwise staying consistent throughout. Very tasty, overall, with a very rich aspect and just enough spice to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (33/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC awhile back and was apparently some sort of pre-release version of this blend given the secondary "Pre-release" band on it under the main band. From what I can tell, this release was from 2021 and the final release was possibly tweaked to add some ligero, or maybe quite a bit of ligero.  I didn't get the impression while smoking this one that it had much ligero in it as that type of leaf has a distinctive taste, at least to my palate, not to mention strength.  This one didn't seem all that strong. At any rate, this was a fine smoke, and now I'll be on the lookout for the final release for comparison purposes... (33/35)

A fairly firm, very dark perfecto, no veins & decent oils.  PLA wheat & hay; PLT earth & wheat; PLD moderate.  Typical perfecto easy toast & light, a moderate draw, an even burn, & a wood & hay smoke.  Aged wood & leather, a bit of oily earth & some herbal spice in mouth & nose are the leads.  The strength is medium.  The 1/3 picks up a bit of iodine which starts to fade around the 1/2.  The wood is up front but nuances of coffee & bitter chocolate start to creep in.  The coffee builds in last 1/3 & takes the edge off the wood, making for a nicer ending profile & finish.  The body is medium but the iodine note was a minus.  I really expected more from this one.

Appearance and construction: A couple minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, charred wood, and tangy spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. Pretty tasty, overall, although it missed my wheelhouse by just a bit. Strength was about medium. (30/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the thin side, and a wavy burn to start. I quickly gave it a 2nd shallow V-cut on top of the initial cut and this helped to bring smoke output to optimal shortly thereafter. The burn evened out through the first third with the ash falling past 1" leaving a small cone. The burn continued a bit wavily but self-correcting through the remainder and down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal from the first third on. (18/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as part of their monthly "Farm Rolled" pack awhile back. Haven't heard of the factory it's made at but it was a pretty nice smoke even if it didn't check all the flavor and construction boxes as emphatically as I normally like.  Definitely good enough to smoke again, though. What happened? I guess they sold out to Swisher and the quality went to less than great. My go to smoke for years and now I'm looking for replacement. I keep wondering if these are counterfeit. Out of a box I get maybe 5 that will smoke right. Seems they are just an expensive Isla del sol now.... sad
Anyone else?
