Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  This one has been generously sponsored by our member ninfiction (Brian).  The cigar provided for this round is the San Cristobal Ovation Decadence.

The Hype:
San Cristobal is a premium brand patiently blended by legendary cigar-maker, Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia in Estelí, Nicaragua, that has earned scores of devoted cigar lovers and top ratings over the years. Ovation is the first limited edition San Cristobal. An exclusive production of 2,000 total boxes is drawn from only the finest and rarest tobaccos grown on Garcia family estates. A dark and lustrous San Andrés Oscuro wrapper emerges from an intensive two-and-a-half-year double fermentation to reveal a full-bodied, captivating richness over a proprietary selection of aged Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos. Articulate notes of dark cocoa, wood and leather register with an exquisite potency. The finish reveals sweet hickory aromas and a gratifying aftertaste. Ovation is meticulously rolled in each format, offering a cool, complex draw with an abundance of irresistible flavor. While supplies last, prepare to relish Pepin’s most decadent release to date!

This cigar was enjoyed with None

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

This cigar starts off veiny. The cigar is tight with no soft spots.  Aroma of dark chocolate with sweet notes of spice. The cap looks to be  haphazardly applied. Cut with a Xikar double guillotine cutter. Cut was straight and without issue, Overall a well built cigar

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

Toasted well. Had to cut the cap more as draw was very hard.  Ash is white and solid. Burn is very smooth and not too fast or slow....just dead on great burn. Never had to relight and smoke rate is good.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Draw is great. Throughout the entire cigar the draw never disappointed. This cigar was constructed very well. wrapper is tight and well defined. A few veins show, but give the stick character. Outside the wrapper is shiny but not oily. Cap was the only issue as it was not put on very well.

Flavor: 33 Points of 35 Possible

First third gives way to hints of cocoa and earthy notes. Second third, a chocolate creamy flavor is starting to emerge. Some woody notes as well.
Smooth taste and no bitterness at all. Smoke is plentiful after the first third
Final third start to taste pepper and wood notes

Summary

The construction and feel of this cigar are of top quality. The only negative was the cap. The burn was very good and the flavors were well rounded. Ash was white and tight. This is a cigar I will have to add to my humidor
