San Cristobal Ovation

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  This one has been generously sponsored by our member ninfiction (Brian).  The cigar provided for this round is the San Cristobal Ovation Decadence.

The Hype:
San Cristobal is a premium brand patiently blended by legendary cigar-maker, Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia in Estelí, Nicaragua, that has earned scores of devoted cigar lovers and top ratings over the years. Ovation is the first limited edition San Cristobal. An exclusive production of 2,000 total boxes is drawn from only the finest and rarest tobaccos grown on Garcia family estates. A dark and lustrous San Andrés Oscuro wrapper emerges from an intensive two-and-a-half-year double fermentation to reveal a full-bodied, captivating richness over a proprietary selection of aged Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos. Articulate notes of dark cocoa, wood and leather register with an exquisite potency. The finish reveals sweet hickory aromas and a gratifying aftertaste. Ovation is meticulously rolled in each format, offering a cool, complex draw with an abundance of irresistible flavor. While supplies last, prepare to relish Pepin’s most decadent release to date!

This cigar was enjoyed with strong coffee w/cream

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

Very firm at the cap, but straight cut nicely. Very dark Oscuro wrapper, espresso color. Very visible difference between the filler and binder tobacco, should prove to be an interesting smoke. Wrapper has a nice smooth feel,  but not very oily. The cigar had a very earthy, woody aroma pre-light that made me want to smoke it immediately.

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar had a nice even burn right from the light, with a firm white ash that held up well. The burn maintained perfectly throughout the entire smoke. There was a wonderful volume of smoke and the only relight required was due to me having to take a phone call.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Cigar has a perfect draw, not too free and not caving my face in; it was just right. Wrapper is in perfect shape, it had no cracking and had nice pleasant earthy taste. The cap cut well and did not fray or unravel, and the wrapper held together with no issues.

Flavor: 32 Points of 35 Possible

The Ovation is a full bodied strong cigar but is not overpowering. It really paired well with the strong coffee. First third I am tasting espresso, woodiness, with a nutty flavor and aroma. A real flavor bomb. Midway the flavor hung in there and was very consistent. The burn also continued to stay even and the smoke was nice and cool.

Summary

The San Cristobal Ovation Decadence is a superb cigar. It  is a flavor bomb with wonderful smoke volume and near perfect construction. As is usual for the brand, the cigar band is pure artwork and so is the cigar itself. This is box worthy, hands down. Another Don Pepin Garcia masterpiece! I wish I had another hand so I could give it three thumbs up !
