Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Camacho Liberty 2005 Throwback

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2005 Throwback.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Cigarsatyourprice.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

The 2018 Liberty is being marketed as a "throwback" to the 2005 Liberty using the same blend as the 2005 Liberty.  All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with Yingling Light

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

This cigar had a mild aroma of tobacco with a sweetness to it.  The wrapper had only minute veins with the exception of one spot in the middle of the barrel which appeared to be a large vein that was repaired.  I probably would not have let that go through Quality control.  Otherwise the wrapper was seamless and had an oily feel to it.  The triple cap had one spot that was not completely glued down but cut clean and straight

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

This cigar had a slight resistance to the draw.  It was almost perfect, could have produced a bit more smoke initially.  The cigar was a slow burner with a light gray ash.  It held together very well for 1 1/2 inches before it dropped.  You could watch the wrapper roll back while burning and smolder with the oils.  I only had one minor touch up at 3/3 which was not a deal breaker at all

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

The manner these figurado's are rolled is simply amazing.  The wrapper did have a repair done on it in the middle of the barrel as mentioned before but was only a cosmetic flaw.  The remainder of the wrapper was meticulously rolled.   The cap had the last portion that was not completely glued down, again cosmetic.  It cut clean.  The draw had a slight restriction to it but very acceptable.

Flavor: 31 Points of 35 Possible

1/3 The initial flavors I picked up on were pepper, some leather, a subtle wood flavor with a touch of sweetness to it.  Initially, I found the strength more medium
2/3 There was a lot less pepper, more leather and wood with a bit of baking spices now.  The flavors were the best here, and gave a bit more of a wow factor compared to the 1/3.  The strength gained a bit more here to medium full while still maintaining a very enjoyable flavor
3/3  Not much of a flavor change here, leather wood and a mild touch of peppery spice.  The cigar did smoke well all the way to a nub, having to use a nubber on it

Summary

I really enjoyed this Liberty as I do every year.  The cigar smoked very well with nice flavors.  For a high end cigar, I would have expected a bit more of a wow effect in the flavors department but in all was very enjoyable. The bands with the stars and stripes theme and coffins as the red and white stripes was tastefully done.  Wish I would have done a box for the whole set
