Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Camacho Liberty 2005 Throwback
Written by Cigar Geeks Member: Gustoff

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2005 Throwback.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Cigarsatyourprice.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

The 2018 Liberty is being marketed as a "throwback" to the 2005 Liberty using the same blend as the 2005 Liberty.  All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with Selzer Water

Pre-Light: 20 Points of 20 Possible

Sweet smell overall. Beautiful triple cap which carries a rich smell of fruit, something along the lines of a fig, which is more prevalent toward the cap. The wrapper is extremely smooth with no visible veins, no discoloration, just a smooth medium/dark brown. This stick has earned a cut by my favorite Rocky branded guillotine cutter, and I'm not let down. Very clean, no torn cap.

Light & Burn: 11 Points of 15 Possible

Light a burn was easy and even through the first 2/3 of the smoke. It began to run quite a bit in the last 3rd which got a little under my skin, but nothing a single touchup didn't fix. Ash throughout was a very light gray, and did crack a bit, but it held strong and only fell off in 1 inch bits. The Liberty provided a great thick smoke predominately throughout. The smoke did seem to thin out a bit toward the end of the 1st and 2nd third, but recovered with a thick smoke shortly after in both instances.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

There were absolutely no issues in construction of this cigar. The draw was a perfect a draw as I've ever experienced. The wrapper did not peel/flake/crack, the cap was tight and cut easily. The band was easily slid off of the cigar with no damage to the wrapper. BEAUTIFUL build!

Flavor: 23 Points of 35 Possible

I would love to give the flavor an amazing write-up, but alas I cannot. For all the hype that this release had, I was a bit at a loss in the flavor profile. The 1st third kicked off with a strong pepper, and a sweet sweet recovery which got me ever so excited (b/c I am not a huge fan of super peppery smoke). The pepper only lasted those first couple puffs, and the whole cigar transitioned to a barnyard taste. I could pickup the wheats and grasses, but I lost the sweet follow through I experienced previously, and I immediately missed it. 2nd third did not bring in anything new, the very occasional burst of pepper, a little sweetness, then barnyard again. What I did enjoy immensely was the when the smoke would transition from the sweet to barnyard, it was incredibly thick, I could almost chew it! Into the last third I was getting a bit of citrus, like orange peel possibly. Then back to the earthy barnyard.

Summary

I did not have the privilege to experience one of the actual 2005 Liberties that are so highly rated. All the hype had me very excited to experience the vast many hints and flavors and profiles of the 2005 throwback. I don't want to play this cigar down, this was a delicious smoke with a great medium/light profile. What I experienced was a very well constructed cigar which utilized a high quality tobacco. And which provided a very smooth, rich, but very unexciting bouquet of flavors. I will enjoy smoking the other sticks over the next couple years to see how they improve. Thank you SO MUCH for allowing me to chance to take part in this review! I enjoyed participating immensely!
