Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  This one has been generously sponsored by our member Cfickter (Chuck).  The cigar provided for this round is the Black Label Trading Company Leaf by James.

A top-notch collaboration between Black Label Trading Co.’s James Brown and Jim “Island Jim” Robinson, Leaf by James cigars are sure to please new and veteran cigar connoisseurs alike. These cigars, available in Toro, are packed to the brim with an abundance of mouthwatering flavors such as oak, espresso, dark chocolate, and black pepper. These delectable vitolas are made with only the best tobacco, as they are wrapped in a beautiful Pennsylvanian broadleaf, bound with Ecuadorian Habano, and filled with premium Nicaraguan tobacco. In addition to their complex flavor profile and wonderful construction, these cigars have an incredibly smooth draw and even burn. Be sure to add some top-of-the-line Leaf by James cigars to your humidor for a smoking experience you will be sure to return to.

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

This stick was received on 11-20-2018 from Cfickter (Chuck)and placed in the humi (no cello wrapper) for almost 2 months at RH-65. It was laid out at room temp (70 degrees for 2 days) prior to smoking.

Smoke date: 01-21-2019, lasting 90 minutes before laying it down for a final rest.

I did not know what to expect as this stick was a "first timer" for me although I have had several "The Leaf by Oscar"s in the past. The wrapper was dark in color with several small veins throughout. The stick was firm with a perfect cap and I chose to use a V-Cut. Pre - light draw was smooth and easy with initial notes of chocolate and cocoa.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

This stick was an easy light, and a nice even toasting. It gave off a good deal of smoke, again with hints of chocolate. No relights were needed throughout, and only a few minor touch ups for very minimal uneven burns. During the smoke, this stick continued to give off ample amounts of smoke (even during rest periods between draws)with chocolate and coffee/cocoa being at the forefront. The stick burnt with a grey-white ash that held together well at lengths of 1 to 2 inches before being "rolled off".

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

This stick was very firm, and tightly constructed. The wrapper had several minimal veins but they in no way adversely affected the smoke-ability nor enjoyment / experience of this stick. Actually, there were no adverse conditions at all that are worth mention. The pre light draw has already been discussed and the after light draw was easy and consistent throughout. The wrapper and cap have been mentioned also. I was impressed with the overall feel of the wrapper, as it was not too oily and not too dry (just how I prefer them).

Flavor: 30 Points of 35 Possible

Here's where I must point out that the past 3 weeks, I have been fighting a flu bug, so with meds etc, my sinuses and taste buds are not up to par. I'm sure there are other notes and flavors in this stick but predominately all I was able to detect was chocolate, cocoa, coffee and maybe some spice / pepper towards the end. I'm looking forward to firing up some of these when back to normal. I'm also sure that I would have scored a few more points here with healthy "tasters and smellers".

Summary

Overall, I enjoyed this stick and will definitely purchase some in the future. I look forward to enjoying another one when feeling better. Thanks to Chuck for allowing me to participate in this month's Geek Critique.
