Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Arturo Fuente Magnum R (Rosado Sungrown) Vitola 52

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  This one has been generously sponsored by our member Vroomp (Brad).  The cigar provided for this round is the Arturo Fuente Magnum R (Rosado Sungrown) Vitola 52.

The Arturo Fuente Rosado Sungrown Magnum R 52 is yet another show-stopping cigar coming from master blender Carlos Fuente Jr. Ever since their beginning, the Fuente family has absolutely dominated the cigar industry with their exotic blends, incredible workmanship and unmatched consistency. The Rosado Sungrown is by no means any exception to this standard of quality that the Fuentes seem to master like nobody else. As just about all Fuente cigars, this one hails from the Dominican Republic and is lovingly rolled using the finest quality Dominican filler and binder leaves. The big story about this cigar, however, is the exotic Ecuadorian Rosado Sungrown wrapper leaf, gathered from the lower primings of the tobacco plant for a more mellow, "old-school" taste, straying from Carlos Fuente Jr's signature trend of powerful "experienced smoker only" cigars of recent years. These leaves were left over from the original Fuente Sungrown line and aged for an incredible 8-10 years before rolling. After production, the cigars age for an additional year in order for the flavors to "marry."

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 20 Possible

Medium brown wrapper on the dry side but smooth to the touch. A couple of minor veins. Cigar feels like it’s firmly packed. Finished with a triple cap. Wrapper and foot smell like sweet cedar. Cold draw tastes like a Yoo-hoo, very sweet.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

One side of the foot of the cigar just did not want to burn. Toasted it a few times, but it was slow going on one side. Finally about 1/2” into the smoke the stubborn side came around and caught up. After this the burn light straightens out nicely with no touch ups required.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

A solid feel to this cigar, no soft spots. A spotless wrapper with tight seams and a nice triple cap. Draw is a tad on the open side but still very much acceptable. Ash is a dark grey and solid, rolling it off in 1” increments.

Flavor: 32 Points of 35 Possible

Starts off with a little blast of sweet cedar spice and pepper up front. A thick smoke with a nice long finish (that’s what she said). Classic Fuente start.

1/3 the sweet cedar spice and pepper back off somewhat, developing into a very creamy smooth smoke with almost a citrus type of tanginess to it. Little bit of zing left on the finish with some good natural tobacco earthiness to it. Retrohale leaves a nice spice blast in the nose.

2/3 flavors meld together much more now and get tougher to distinguish. Sweet cedar primarily, with some of the tanginess there. A clean tobacco and zing on the finish. A very tasty and well balanced smoke at this point. Medium bodied.

3/3 a continuation of the same flavors, a bit more earthy notes closing things out.

Summary

Overall a classic Fuente cigar. Good construction, nice complimentary flavors with enough complexity to make this cigar stand out. Solid medium bodied. A very tasty experience and a cigar I would recommend. Thank you very much Brad for sponsoring this and for including me!
