Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Egars.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

The 2019 Liberty is being marketed as a "throwback" to the 2012 Liberty using the same blend as the 2012 Liberty.  All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with Mexican Coca-Cola with real sugar...

Pre-Light: 16 Points of 20 Possible

This one had a couple of prominent veins and a number of bumps, an oily sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots. The cap appeared well-constructed. Gave it a punch and PLD was open. PLA gave a whiff of coffee.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn was occasionally wavy but self-correcting with the ash dropping well past 2" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with self-correction occurring regularly to keep the burn even.  No touch-ups were needed.

Construction: 25 Points of 30 Possible

As mentioned above, draw was great, burn was great.  Only flaws were mostly aesthetic in terms of the veiny, bumpy wrapper, although the veins did seem to contribute to the occasional waviness in the burn, but this didn't affect overall smokeability thanks to the aforementioned self-correction.

Flavor: 30 Points of 35 Possible

The light produced a full-bodied profile with notes of leather and black pepper, which were quite strong at the start along with some noticeable spiciness on retro, but it all smoothed out during the first third making for a very flavorful and enjoyable smoke.  The 2nd third was the most enjoyable part of this stick with the flavors being the smoothest and most well-blended of the entire smoke.

Summary

Pretty nice Sunday morning smoke with the only drawback being the full strength of this stick, which caused me to nub it sooner than I might have with a milder stick, although not as soon as I probably should have given the nic. affects on my cerebellum towards the end.  Still, I'd smoke this one again and will as I have a couple more...
