Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Egars.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

The 2019 Liberty is being marketed as a "throwback" to the 2012 Liberty using the same blend as the 2012 Liberty.  All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

Pre-Light: 17 Points of 10 Possible

The cigar was received in a bright red coffin box following along with The Liberty Series patriotic themes. Stored in the coffin box / personal humi at 65% RH and 70 degree room temp for about 2 weeks before being taken out of the coffin box and allowed to relax in the humi / cello wrap at 65%/70 degree for the week prior to review. The cigar is beveled at each end and fat in the middle - by design, having a slightly oily sheen and numerous but small veins throughout. The cap was a bit frazzled, with a slight loose end but nothing that could not be corrected during the cut. The stick was firm to the touch and well packed - no soft spots detected. it had a heavy earthy cedar and spice smell right out of the cello. Smooth easy cut the corrected the cap issue. The pre-light draw was smooth and easy with a "burst" of cedar / pepper / spice and cocoa.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

The light / toasting was also smooth and easy. Again with aromas of cedar and spice in plumbs of white / grey smoke. The time of smoking lasted almost 2 hours, with only a few minor touch ups required. for the most part, the burn was relatively easy and razor sharp. The grey ash held on for 1 to 2 inches before being tapped off. Lots of smoke given off throughout, with the aroma of cedar / spices on the predominate side.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

This cigar was well constructed - firm to the touch. The wrapper had many small veins but none that affected the smoking pleasure of the stick. The cap did have a slight loose end and was frazzled but taken care of during the initial cutting.

Flavor: 32 Points of 45 Possible

The stick had a strong flavorful start, then settled down into a smooth tasteful middle, ending up with another blast of flavor that lingered on the taste buds well after the smoking process ended.

1st - cedar with pepper and spice and a blast of cocoa or chocolate.

Middle (fat section) a smooth blending flavor of cedar, toast and cinnamon (almost like the taste of cinnamon toast - NO - Really!!!) just about like a food taste from days gone by.

The last stage seems to have a little kick to it(nicotine), again blending the cedar, spice, cocoa and cinnamon into a "toasty finish".

Summary

Never trying the original 2012 version, I have no way to compare this years stick to a "throwback" memory. If this stick does really compare to the 2012 version, then it's a keeper. The smoke delivered flavor, smokability, enjoyment, taste and aromas that satisfy. I'm glad I ordered a case as I will be enjoying these for quite awhile. Thanks to Kevin, Pete and the folks at eGars (David)for allowing me to take part in this critique (ALREADY looking forward to see what next year brings for Camacho and THE LIBERTY SERIES.
