Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2012 Throwback.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Egars.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

The 2019 Liberty is being marketed as a "throwback" to the 2012 Liberty using the same blend as the 2012 Liberty.  All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with Lost Abbey Ghosts in the Forrest

Pre-Light: 16 Points of 10 Possible

The wrapper is oily and shiny with some mottled splotches and a few heavy veins. All construction aspects are spot and the cigar is firm and heavy in the hand.  The aroma is spicy and sweet with baking spices  and compost mixed equally.

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

Considering the conditions I'm smoking in, the performance of this cigar is impressive.  I'm on the beach in California and the wind is readily blowing... The burn, however is almost perfect and I've not needed any  relights or touch ups.  Smoke production is impressive as I'm getting mouthfuls of rich and oily smoke.  Hard to be any better.

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

Construction is spot on for this cigar.... All seams are tight and the cigar feels solid in the hand.  The cap is perfect, and the wrapper is visually stunning.  The draw is superb and allows for plenty of smoke while keeping things cool and controlled.

Flavor: 28 Points of 45 Possible

The initial flavors are full of black pepper and strong espresso.  Through the nose the pepper is strong  enough to sting and bring tears to my eyes...

The second portion of the cigar has the strong espresso and black pepper fading a bit and more creamy coffee entering the flavor bouquet.  The flavors are more enjoyable at this point but the smoke is still to peppery to retrohale more than occasionally.

The Final third lost  the cream and actually became a bit harsh and bitter.  Not surprisingly the smoke has remained very sharp through the nostrils.

Summary

As always I'm excited to pick up the new Liberty releases... I've smoked them all, in every size, and I've readily enjoyed nearly every one. This one was really enticing for me because I enjoyed the original 2012 release immensely.  That said, this one fell a bit short of the mark for me.  Some parts were excellent but as a whole it fell short of my expectations.  Hopefully some time in the humidor will smooth out out.

I'm very appreciative of the opportunity to be a party of this geek critique.... And look forward to trying another of these in about six months or so.
