Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Torano Vault Gold VLE100

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Carlos Torano Vault Gold VLE100.  There are only 100 boxes of 9 cigars, so this is truly a micro-release.  We are truly very fortunate to be able to get a set of these for review as they were only available as an event cigar as a part of the "Blends From the Vault Tour".  This is the third installment of a special series of blends that Carlos Torano Sr. had kept in his personal blend book.  This critique has been generously sponsored by Torano Cigars.  A special thanks goes out to Carlos Torano Cigars for making this one happen and to Brad (Vroomp) for providing the sticks!

This cigar was enjoyed with Cerveza Dos Equis Lager Especial

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

This is a big box-press cigar, reminds me of the La Flor Dominicana Factory  Press. In spite of it's size, it has a very dignified appearance. The cigar tapers slightly at the cap. It is extremely flat on the bottom and sides, and just slightly convex on the top (or front side). Pre-light aroma is very light, with cedar being the dominant note. The band is embossed gold foil, with apparently no ink or other colors. The band says "Blends from the VAULT", with all the words except VAULT in teeny-tiny letters.  The cold draw was very open.

Light & Burn: 11 Points of 15 Possible

Cigar lit easily. Ash is a 50/50 mix of light and dark grays. Excellent smoke production for the first 2/3, but it tapered off a little toward the end. Burn line got diagonal on me about 1" into the cigar.  I corrected the burn line and tapped off the ash, which fell in a solid chunk.  Burn line remained wavy. Smoke time was about 90 minutes.

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

Beautiful, smooth chocolate-brown wrapper. Draw was very open, which I like, especially in a big-ring cigar.  After about an inch the draw firmed up a little.  The box-press and slight taper at the head made this easier to smoke than some other 60-ring cigars.   Cap was skillfully applied and caused no issues.

Flavor: 30 Points of 45 Possible

Room note seems strong, but the smoke on the palate is very soft.  Opening flavor notes were oak and light spices.  About 1/2" in I started to pick up just a hint of red pepper. At this point the cigar is leaving behind a faint bitter aftertaste, reminiscent of hops. At about an inch in I started to pick up leather notes. Shortly after that, more peppery spice presented, and the cigar became less smooth. Spiciness lingered on the palate.  At about the half-way point the initial smooth, creamy and slightly sweet flavor returned, although it seemed to be building in strength. Pepper notes faded in and out. The final third the boldness of the flavor diminished and the became more one-dimensional, with leather notes dominating. Could really feel the nicotine hit by this time.

Summary

An interesting cigar, and quite a departure for Torano.  Presentation is lovely, but there are some burn issues.  This is a strong cigar, but it kind of sneaked up on me -- it didn't really feel the nicotine until near the end.  There were a number of flavor transitions with the cigar, but not a lot of complexity.  I have mixed feelings about this cigar -- glad I got to try one, but  don't think I'd be interested in smoking another. It's just too strong for me.
