Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Torano Vault Gold VLE100

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Carlos Torano Vault Gold VLE100.  There are only 100 boxes of 9 cigars, so this is truly a micro-release.  We are truly very fortunate to be able to get a set of these for review as they were only available as an event cigar as a part of the "Blends From the Vault Tour".  This is the third installment of a special series of blends that Carlos Torano Sr. had kept in his personal blend book.  This critique has been generously sponsored by Torano Cigars.  A special thanks goes out to Carlos Torano Cigars for making this one happen and to Brad (Vroomp) for providing the sticks!

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

Wrapper looks like a fine tanned leather. No scars. Veins barely pass the surface or affect the smoothness. Pre-smell is of fine tobacco. Cold draw tastes a bit hollow. Cap is nice, cuts well with my teeth, as I no longer own a cutter. Fancy gold label promises quality and delivers.

Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible

Lights evenly, but I used a lot of lights to cover the circumference, but once lit it stayed lit. Fairly slow burning with some unevenness requiring minor repair. Because of the slow speed nothing happens too fast to catch. Ash is grey and white and easy to keep from falling. At two inches I tap it to avoid an accident on my keyboard. Burn needs a second minor repair halfway. Always lots of smoke.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Draw is just right, cap is firm. Wrapper maintains its integrity. No deterioration as it progresses. Excellent construction impresses me. Flattened body keeps the 6x60 size from feeling fat. Neither too tight nor too loose. Construction quality doesn't waver throughout.

Flavor: 33 Points of 45 Possible

Initial reaction is quite positive. Impressive body, between medium and medium-full. Rich woody and leathery flavor. No unpleasant secondary tastes or notes. Complexity is moderate upon retrohaling, but nice. Very pleased with first third. Sweet aftertaste, no bitterness. Delighted with second third. Flavor profile is unchanged, but not in need of any change. Last third keeps going strong. Ends as good as it starts.

Summary

This is a very enjoyable smoke. Tasty, well-constructed and free of unpleasant surprises. I would definitely smoke another. Nicotine content is moderate, avoiding any dizziness. It's gratifying to be reviewing a real winner!
