Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

This year's Liberty release is a stunning cigar,  presented in the usual coffin, but departing from the new Camacho branding with a simple but awesome looking white on black band.  Teeming with oils, there is a fair amount of veining in the wrapper.  The cigar is spongier than I expected.  The pre-light aroma is a wonderful earthy bouquet or rich tobacco.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

Burn wise, it performed about as expected.  The first inch or so required some care to get it going and keep it straight.  Then to the band this thing burned razor sharp.  At this point, the burn became a bit jagged at times, but self-corrected and never needed any help.  The ash was AWESOME, holding firm all the way to the band, and that is only because I tapped it.  Smoke was extremely thick, not quite Liga Privada thick, but certainly above average.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

No complaints other than the slight sponginess.  The wrapper was beautiful had no defects, the cap was well done and clipped with no problem.  The draw was a dream, just a tad of resistance.  Considering the heft and unique size of this cigar, a perfect draw and great ash are no small accomplshment.

Flavor: 31 Points of 45 Possible

I could tell from the first puff this one could be summed up in two words, smooth power.  I expected a pepper-blast out of the gate, instead getting an incredibly smooth experience, earthy and leathery.  Soon after, the pepper moved in, accompanied by a nice meatiness.  All that kept running through my head through the first two inches was velvety and smooth.  Somewhere around the midpoint, the strength started ramping up, and fairly early I was feeling this one in my gut.  The charcoal grilled meat note is very prominent at this point, while the pepper is still there, and the leather has faded.  Moving into the final third, it seems the meaty notes have moved on, and now I am left with more of a charred wood profile.  I was glad to have plenty of water on hand to refresh my palate, as this smoke could weigh on you pretty quick.  Overall, while not a multitude of difference flavors in play, the ones there were delicious and played off each other very well.

Summary

Overall, I came away very impressed by the 2014 Liberty and may even pick up some more before I can't.  The grilled meat notes I certainly enjoy in a cigar are not found that often, and this one delivered that.  I think a little molasses or sweetness may have balanced this stick out a bit more, and made it truly an all-time great, but just a few weeks old, this cigar is smoking wonderfully.  Certainly a cigar that is meant to be savored, make sure you have time to devote and enjoy this cigar.  I found the surprising smoothness to be very relaxing, which is a fantastic quality in a smoke.

Thanks to cigarsatyourprice.com for the opportunity to review this great limited edition cigar.
