Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2014.  This release is the 2014 limited edition rare blend of a limited supply from 3 distinct countries and 4 different tobaccos.  Made in a small batch of only 2000 boxes it is certianly a rare pleasure to have the lineup in our Geek Critique.  This critique has been generously sponsored by Cigarsatyourprice.  Thanks goes out to Kevin (wescat) for coordinating this critique!

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

Made in the Camacho's signature 11/18 chape, this year's Liberty is a real eye-pleaser.  The Habano wrapper is dark oiled leather, a supple colorado maduro.  The wrapping and rolling are largely excellent, though I did find a soft spot near the head.

The double cap slices cleanly with my double guillotine cutter.  The cold draw is easy, with dark chocolate and very little spice.

Light & Burn: 15 Points of 15 Possible

Perfect performance in the combustion category.  Easy to light, the Liberty burned slowly and built a firm, compact, gray biscuit ash.  The burn was very straight, apart from a couple of insignificant wobbles, with no relights necessary.  Excellent smoke production, too.  Smoke time was about 1.5 hrs

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Excellent marks for construction.  The wrapper leaf was near flawless and skillfully applied.  The rolling was top-notch, but I'm taking off a point for the soft spot I found.  Another point off because the cap was not quite perfect and the draw was just a bit too easy -- better than the alternative, to be sure, and it didn't cause too hot a burn, but I think special release cigars like the Liberty should be graded tough.

Flavor: 30 Points of 45 Possible

Because the cold draw offered so much chocolate flavor, I expected to taste it in the smoke.  Not so.  The first inch was all tobacco, and leather, maybe a hint of oak or hickory, with a savory, meaty note.  Very smooth, with a clean, relatively short finish.

After about an inch, I thought some new flavors were arriving.  I got just a touch of sweet, and a suggestion of some spice.  But these flavors never quite materialized beyond those hints.  Still very smooth, and still on the savory side.  Strength is medium here, with medium to full body.

In the middle third -- in the 11/18 format, this is where the cigar bulges a bit thicker -- the flavor tended less towards savory and more towards sweet.  The finish had a little more creaminess, a little more vanilla.  The flavors stayed pretty steady in this region, with occasional wisps of hazelnut.

The last third brought the return of the savory tobacco and leather.  There was also a pleasant saltiness, and some oak.  It stayed like this until I hit the last inch and I put it down.

Summary

This year's Liberty is a very well crafted cigar, worthy of its predecessors.  The flavor experience was similarly excellent:  smooth and balanced, with shifts from meaty leather to hints of cream and back to a salty, savory finish.  A very, very nice cigar that rewards a contemplative smoke.
