Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2014.  This release is the 2014 limited edition rare blend of a limited supply from 3 distinct countries and 4 different tobaccos.  Made in a small batch of only 2000 boxes it is certianly a rare pleasure to have the lineup in our Geek Critique.  This critique has been generously sponsored by Cigarsatyourprice.  Thanks goes out to Kevin (wescat) for coordinating this critique!

This cigar was enjoyed with Coors Light (don't laugh!)

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 10 Possible

The presentation of the 2014 camacho liberty is excellent as usual.  My cigar is numbered 3,418 of 40,000.  This year has an unfinished coffin box that is stamped with the year, "LIBERTY SERIES" and the Camacho Scorpion.  The simple labeling hints that more care was taken on the stick than the box...always a good thing!

The stick itself is tissue wrapped, as usual, and is visually stunning.  The wrapper is leathery and veiny.  The wrapper is tightly applied however due to variations in the shade of the wrapper the seams are easily visible.  The cap is a triple and is even and perfectly applied.

I very much like the main band this year...it is patriotic and quite stunning in its simplicity and message.  The foot band is unremarkable but a perfect match for it's larger counterpart.

The main aroma I get pre light is cedar and some sweet tobacco.  While the cedar is strong, the other aromas are faint, and just hint at what might be to come.

Light & Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

The rate of burn was excellent, however this stick did not want to burn evenly.  I'll credit some of that to the ocean breeze, but I did have to correct on several occasions.  Once past the first third, however, the burn remained sharp until the nub. The dark gray ash was strong, never gracing my lap with an accidental ashing.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

This cigar seems very well made with no flaws that I can find.  It is heavy, firm, and even with no soft spots or blemishes.  To me the veins add to the rugged character of this line and speak of how Liberty can be rough...and great for those willing to work for it!

Flavor: 34 Points of 45 Possible

1st
Prelight the flavors were very muted and were mainly a mild tobacco...really nothing to speak of.

Upon lighting I got a significant pepper blast that actually made my eyes water...after the pepper faded, a baking spice note became apparent...predominantly allspice and a bit of nutmeg.  The pepper faded almost entirely as this third ended with the exception of the retrohale which retained a nice pepper kick.

2nd
The second third of the 2014 Liberty brought in the promised sweetness, along with more pronounced baking spices.  The smoke has really become smooth and is oily and thick, coating my palate and leaving me with a long, slightly spicy finish.  The strength at this point is medium, and the smoke quite complex.

3rd
The final third of this cigar showed a re-emergence of the pepper, along with a bit of woodiness...dare I say cedar??  The sweetness has faded, and the pepper is more of a white pepper than a black pepper...spicy, but pleasantly so.  The smoke output has remained voluminous, and is oily still...really luxuriant.  This smoke, for me, has gotten better as it is approaching the nub...not something that always happens!

Summary

Again, the Liberty performs, and remains on the top of my personal favorites list.  If not for the initial burn issues, this cigar would be close to perfect for me.  This is a cigar that I will recommend to all of my friends, and I will always try to have some ready to smoke!

Thank you for allowing me to review this fine product!
