Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Oliva/ Studio Tabac Serie V Liga Especial Double Robusto

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Oliva Serie V Double Robusto.  Some of the hype surrounding the cigar: "Also known as 'Ligero Especial', the Serie V from Oliva cigars is an enchanting Nicaraguan puro chock full of flavorful goodness. On the outside, a beautiful Habano Sun Grown wrapper glistens with oils. Thick and smooth as silk, this impressive leaf conceals a powerful, yet balanced and smooth blend of aged Nicaraguan ligero from the Jalapa Valley of Nicaragua. The Oliva Serie "V" cigar is full-bodied and full-flavored, offering layers of coffee, spice, and tobacco flavors, with a touch of dark, unsweetened chocolate on the finish.  This cigar has been generously sponsored by our member Jarred (lumberjack).  Thanks very much for your generosity Jarred!

This cigar was enjoyed with Ice water

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 10 Possible

This was a nice cigar without any large veins, very firm construction, no soft spongy spots. Off center of  the foot is a large stem that I pulled 1/2 inch of it out before lighting. There was a nice grassy aroma mixed with some mature barn yard aromas, not unpleasant at all. The cut was clean and the pre-light draw was grassy with a slight resistance.

Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible

The ash throughout the cigar was off-white gray, solid, and tapped in one in over one inch chunks.
First 1/3 - The burn was a little uneven, but not severe, and no runners or tunneling present.
2nd 1/3 - The burn was more uneven and the wrapper near  the burn line has slightly pulled away, but nothing to effect the draw.
Final 1/3 -  The stem ran throughout the length of the cigar and I think this was causing the burn issue.
The smell of the cigar had a warm chocolate and floral scent once it warmed up.

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

Overall construction was good. The cap and wrapper were in great shape and other than the large stem in the filler, the construction was nearly flawless. The cap was well placed on the head and offered some slight resistant acne when cut.

Flavor: 34 Points of 45 Possible

First 1/3. From the initial lighting, there was lots of thick off-white smoke with hints of leather, floral, and pine tastes. It was very pleasant.
Second 1/3.  There were well developed chocolate and floral notes as well as a slight ashy after taste, but there were no other harsh notes noticed.
Final 1/3. It was the same as second third but just a little more pronounced as the cigar neared it's end. The ashy after taste is less than before and now leaves a pleasantly distinctive pine, not cedar, taste.

Summary

Overall, I found this to be a pleasant cigar to smoke. It was a very clean smoke with tons of pleasant chocolate and floral notes being produced throughout the entire length of the cigar. The ash was firm and stayed until knocked off and the color was off-white/ gray.
The construction was good other than the large stem that affected the burn line. This was a great cigar and I would recommend it to any level of cigar smoking enthusiasts. The cigar performed well from the prelight aroma right through to the final warm chocolate scent by the end. It was very good.
