Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Oliva/ Studio Tabac Serie V Liga Especial Double Robusto
Written by Cigar Geeks Member: The Burn Ward

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Oliva Serie V Double Robusto.  Some of the hype surrounding the cigar: "Also known as 'Ligero Especial', the Serie V from Oliva cigars is an enchanting Nicaraguan puro chock full of flavorful goodness. On the outside, a beautiful Habano Sun Grown wrapper glistens with oils. Thick and smooth as silk, this impressive leaf conceals a powerful, yet balanced and smooth blend of aged Nicaraguan ligero from the Jalapa Valley of Nicaragua. The Oliva Serie "V" cigar is full-bodied and full-flavored, offering layers of coffee, spice, and tobacco flavors, with a touch of dark, unsweetened chocolate on the finish.  This cigar has been generously sponsored by our member Jarred (lumberjack).  Thanks very much for your generosity Jarred!

This cigar was enjoyed with Green tea

Pre-Light: 17 Points of 10 Possible

A nice maduro colored wrapper. The wrapper has a slight oily sheen and is covered in a series of small veins. The seams are visible as the edge of the wrapper leaf is a touch darker. There is a slightly sweet scent to the wrapper.

It has a nice fill and is firm to the touch. My Xi2 clips the cap clean and reveals a fairly dense pack. A few loose bits of the filler are brushed away.

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

This cigar produces a fairly solid light grey ash. The initial ash holds just before the band when I tap it and remove the band. This cigar burns evenly and requires no touch-ups or re-lights. The cigar produces 2 more inch long ashes.

Plenty of smoke is produced and greatly enhances my enjoyment of this cigar.

Construction: 29 Points of 30 Possible

Excellent draw on this cigar. There are a few minor glue stains from the band, though the band was well applied and removes with ease. There are 4 seams to this masterfully applied cap. There are no issues here. Just a well built cigar.

Flavor: 27 Points of 45 Possible

Initial puffs have a toasty and sweet tobacco taste that quickly piles on a medium spice. The taste remains sweet tobacco with a medium spice until I get an inch in, I start to taste the ligero. The flavor becomes more potent and leather joins the mix. The finish is odd so I'm not sure the green tea plays well but it does not effect my tasting of the smoke.

Just past the halfway point I pick up on cocoa and the smoke tastes sweeter. The finish improves a bit as well. An earthy note comes to play in the final third and fades quickly. The main player is the sweet tobacco taste that continues for the remainder of the cigar.

This cigar falls smack dab in medium strength territory. The body is a bit fuller at times though I find it to be an all around medium smoke.

My issue here is the finish, it's just not enjoyable.

Summary

The Oliva V Double Robusto is an all around good cigar. Based on it's solid construction and pleasant aroma I can see this being a nice golfing cigar or good for taking a stroll somewhere. Overall it would nice to have a few V's lying around in the humi.
