Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Oliva/ Studio Tabac Serie V Liga Especial Double Robusto

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Oliva Serie V Double Robusto.  Some of the hype surrounding the cigar: "Also known as 'Ligero Especial', the Serie V from Oliva cigars is an enchanting Nicaraguan puro chock full of flavorful goodness. On the outside, a beautiful Habano Sun Grown wrapper glistens with oils. Thick and smooth as silk, this impressive leaf conceals a powerful, yet balanced and smooth blend of aged Nicaraguan ligero from the Jalapa Valley of Nicaragua. The Oliva Serie "V" cigar is full-bodied and full-flavored, offering layers of coffee, spice, and tobacco flavors, with a touch of dark, unsweetened chocolate on the finish.  This cigar has been generously sponsored by our member Jarred (lumberjack).  Thanks very much for your generosity Jarred!

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

This Oliva double robusto is a beautiful stick.  A deep chocolate brown wrapper with minimal veining, the barrel is smooth and very firm with no bulges or soft spots.  Aromas of leather and just a hint of barn yard.  The guillotine cut was smooth and perfect.

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

I slowly toasted the stick for about 45 seconds and with one puff it was solidly alight.  Burn was just about perfect: razor sharp for the first and last thirds, with just the tiniest wave in the middle, but no corrections were needed.  The ash was a beautiful light gray and it held for a solid 2.5 inches before falling.  Smoking time was just under an hour.  Smoke quantity and quality were excellent for the first half, dropping back just a bit in the second half.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Construction was excellent, the cap was beautifully applied and cut perfectly, and the wrapper was gorgeous with very tight seams.  The draw was medium with just the tiniest touch of resistance, which is just where I like it.

Flavor: 31 Points of 45 Possible

The first third started with a very full body and many peppery notes, but was never overwhelming.  The pepper toned down in the second third and the body dropped back to more of a medium quality and stayed that way throughout the rest of the smoke.  It never burned hot and it was pleasurable all the way through.

Summary

Oliva makes a lot of nice sticks and this stick certainly met or exceeded their standard.  I'll definitely plan on picking up some more of these.  A perfect stick for an hour's meditation on my deck on a beautiful summer evening.
