Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Curivari Seleccion Privada Eminentes Maduro

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Curivari Seleccion Privada Eminentes Maduro.  Some of the hype surrounding the cigar: "Curivari is a Nicaraguan boutique cigar company that truly embodies the term “for the love of the leaf.” According to the company, their blends are made exclusively with Cuban-seed Criollo and Corojo leaves. The Seleccion Privada line is medium-bodied with notes of cedar, cinnamon, honey sweetness, and floral undertones. This flavor profile, along with excellent construction and a masterful aging process, makes Curivari Seleccion Privada an unforgettable smoke."  This cigar has been generously sponsored by our member Jeff (jdwaynes1980).  Thanks very much for your generosity Jeff!

This cigar was enjoyed with Water

Pre-Light: 17 Points of 10 Possible

The wrapper has a slight oily feel to it and a very soft texture with a few medium sized veins.  It had what looks like a large expertly applied triple cap. The pack is firm for the length of the cigar. There is a very nice sweet earth smell with a touch of floral in the background. It cut nicely.

Light & Burn: 7 Points of 15 Possible

Cigar toasted and lit beautifully but I had a hard time keeping it going. The first third required a relight and several touch ups. The ash was a dark almost black color. Burn is very wonky. The cigar needed constant attention and got hot quickly.

Construction: 23 Points of 30 Possible

Draw is a bit on the tight side. The draw did open up a bit going into the 2nd third.  The wrapper had no problems holding together and the cap was very nice. The seams were nice and tight. With all of the burn problems I encountered in this stick, I hope it was a dud that made it through the quality checks and not the usual experience.

Flavor: 23 Points of 45 Possible

Initial flavors from the light have pepper, a sweet sugary flavor, a bit of earth.  1st third stays sweet and picks up a nutty flavor. The smoke is a bit harsh. 2nd third kept the same profile as the 1st. Final third got bitter and as the smoke heated up the harshness got to be overpowering.

Summary

This did not live up to my expectations. The constant attention took away from the experience. The frequent draws and double puffs required to keep it lit overheated the cigar causing the final third to be unsmokable. I hope I received a dud because I could tell this cigar had a significant amount of potential.
