Cigar Geeks Geek Critique

Curivari Seleccion Privada Eminentes Maduro

Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Curivari Seleccion Privada Eminentes Maduro.  Some of the hype surrounding the cigar: "Curivari is a Nicaraguan boutique cigar company that truly embodies the term “for the love of the leaf.” According to the company, their blends are made exclusively with Cuban-seed Criollo and Corojo leaves. The Seleccion Privada line is medium-bodied with notes of cedar, cinnamon, honey sweetness, and floral undertones. This flavor profile, along with excellent construction and a masterful aging process, makes Curivari Seleccion Privada an unforgettable smoke."  This cigar has been generously sponsored by our member Jeff (jdwaynes1980).  Thanks very much for your generosity Jeff!

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 10 Possible

This is a lovely cigar.  It's firm with no bumpy spots, minimal veins, and a rich chocolate brown color gleaming with oils.  It's a very enticing cigar.  The red band is similar to the one on classic Partagas cigars giving this smoke a very elegant appearance.

It smells slightly sweet with tobacco and a little hay.  The draw is clean and has slight spice.

Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar lights well and draws very nicely.  The ash holds for a solid inch but is a little flakey.  The burn line waves back and forth, it doesn't require a touch-up, but it came close a few times.  At times it seemed like it really wanted to go out, but a few quick puffs fixed that.

Construction: 26 Points of 30 Possible

The draw is lush with dense smoke.  The cap is very nicely applied.  Overall this cigar has true premium construction.  The wrapper didn't want to stay properly lit, however, marring what seems like an otherwise perfect construction.

Flavor: 24 Points of 45 Possible

As with many Nicaraguan cigars, the primary flavor is black coffee/espresso.  It's not harsh, but it's a strong flavor that's bitter on the palette.  The maduro sweetness comes through at times but the primary note is coffee.

The cigar isn't particularly complex, which is fine, and leaves a lot of pepper on the tongue.  The smoke never got too hot, which is a testament to a good roll.

Summary

This cigar isn't my cup of tea, but it's still an excellent cigar for lovers of bold flavors.  It lacks the maduro sweetness that the wrapper suggests it will have.  It is gorgeous to look at however and well-made.
