The Xiphos NR Maduro uses a well aged blend of Nicaraguan Viso, Seco, and Ligero fillers from Esteli and Jalapa with an Indonesian Binder and a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper for a more Medium/Full bodied  enjoyment.

This cigar was enjoyed with iced coffee

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

The wrapper is a nice, deep brown, with an ever so slight reddish hue. It is a tad on the rough n dry side, but still more refined than rustic. There were two small veins, but nothing major. The cap is smooth, well applied, and took my v-cut like a champ. The cigar was packed firm, with no soft spots. The aroma off of the foot was a mix of coffee bean and hay.

Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible

The burn line started a bit uneven, but corrected itself within the first inch and remained sharp throughout the entire smoke. There was a small and very brief tunneling close to the midpoint, but only lasted for a few draws before filling back in. The ash held solid for an inch at a time, featuring a bright white color, with undertones of grey lines, but showed no black specking at all. Very cool!

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

The draw is perfect, with just the right amount of resistance paired with a nice open flow. The wrapper is well applied, with two small veins that did not affect the performance of the cigar. The cap held after cutting, and stayed intact to completion. I don't know if it was just my sample, but the cap had rounded edges, yet the center of the head was a touch flatter than most cigars.

Flavor: 34 Points of 35 Possible

The Xiphos NR Maduro robusto started out with a heavy, slightly creamy coffee flavor up front, touched with an earthy peppery sweetness, and a touch of cocoa. The pepper was more pronounced when retrohaling. I also got a slight tingle on the tongue, but this disappeared after the first inch. The midpoint finds the cigar really mellowing out, and offers up a nice maduro sweetness without the woody undertones. The coffee flavor fades to the back, is more like coffee without cream, and the pepper is ever so faint. I found at times that the sweetness was almost fruit like, but I could not identify a particular fruit to compare it to. It was faint, but it was there. Finishing up, the sweetness transitions with a woody hint, the coffee ticks up and decides to add the pepper back in, but it is very smooth, and there is a slightly dry cocoa flavor on the aftertaste. The strength was heavier at the start and fell to a solid mid strength the rest of the way. Body was mid to mid-full throughout, and the smoke was cool n smooth.

Summary

This was an absolute pleasure to smoke! The flavors, transitions and performance were simply wonderful. Other than a brief, small tunneling near the midpoint, it was perfect. I prefer maduro wrappers that are not too heavy on the woody profile, and this hit the nail squarely on the head. The Xiphos NR Maduro robusto is a cigar that can be enjoyed any time of the day, or night. Thank you Brad, and Xiphos cigars for sponsoring this critique. Brother, you got a winner on your hands...top notch!
