Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2017.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Cigarsatyourprice.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with Water

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 20 Possible

As always the Liberty has a wonderful presentation. Tissue wrapped in a coffin. The band displays both the year, 2017, and a star with "15" signifying the 15th anniversary of the Liberty cigar.

The wrapper of the cigar is a nice chocolate brown and has no visible seams but does have 1 minor vein running almost the entire length. There's a but of softness to the feel near the foot.

Light & Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar burned almost perfectly with only a few wavy spots that always self corrected. The salt/pepper ash was firm, holding on for an inch and a half. As a guy that enjoys large amounts of smoke this cigar did not disappoint. No relights or corrections were required.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

The overall construction of the Liberty is near perfect. As mentioned there is some softness near the foot and the draw was a bit more open that I like. The seams of the wrapper and cap are almost invisible. Very nice looking and performing cigar.

Total smoke time was 1:42 and I set down with probably 15 minutes left in it.

Flavor: 20 Points of 35 Possible

Upon lighting the cigar I was met with what reminded me of nutmeg. I don't think it was exactly that but some similar baking spice maybe. The first third is primarily earth, leather and hints of the baking spice. Really light pepper on the tongue and the retro was very smooth, no pepper at all.

The second and third offered very little else. At about the halfway point of the cigar there was a very nice mix that was difficult to place. Leather, cedar mixed with some grassy notes maybe.

Much of the cigar didn't taste like much more than smoke, and not good smoke, like second hand smoke. Pepper lingered on the tongue for most of the last 2/3 providing almost all of the variety of the profile.

Lacking complexity except in a handful of puffs, this version of the Liberty just isn't that great.

Summary

Overall the 2017 Liberty was a bit of a disappointment, but only because it got pretty boring towards the end of the cigar. There really wasn't enough in the flavor profile to want me to light another one up any time soon.

The look, the construction and burn were great, and really made the score better than it could have been. The flavors not so much, boring and uninteresting for the most part except for a few fleeting moments that were really enjoyable. Hopefully it gets better with a bit of age, I have a few more to smoke but it'll be a while before I do.

Thanks go out to David at cigarsatyourprice.com for providing the cigar and to Kevin for setting up the box split/critique.
