Cigar Geeks Rating

Welcome to another Vendor sponsored Geek Critique.  Up for review this time is the Camacho Liberty 2017.  This critique has been generously sponsored by David of Cigarsatyourprice.com.  Special thanks goes out to Dave for providing the sticks and wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

All of the Camacho Liberty Series cigars boast a complex blend of their rarest and finest tobaccos, with each year's version providing its own special twist. Handcrafted and extremely limited in supply, only 2,000 boxes of this entry into Camacho's Brotherhood Series are made each year. The Liberty series is sold in boxes of 20, with each cigar packaged in its own individual coffin.

This cigar was enjoyed with water

Pre-Light: 19 Points of 20 Possible

Not a lot to do with the quality of the cigar, but inside the coffin is a "15" hat pin commemorating the 15th year of the Liberty.  Same logo as on the band...kind of neat really and definitely unexpected.  Nice maduro color...more milk chocolate than dark chocolate.  A couple veins and it is a little on the firm side...Triple cap...Foot has an aroma that is on the sweeter side.  More spice than earth...maybe a little hay.  Cap cuts cleanly.  Cold draw stays to the same profile...just more depth and the spice is a little more prevalent.

Light & Burn: 15 Points of 15 Possible

Toasted the foot.  It lit nicely and straight.  Straight at 3/4"...Great aroma.  Ash  is white to cream in color and holding tightly.  Ash broke solidly at just over an inch...my guess is that I bumped it earlier when setting it down to type.  Razor straight burn at 2"+.  Second ash was solid again and about 1-1/2".  Any waving of the burn quickly self corrects...  straight going onto the last third...last ash was just as the one before.

Construction: 29 Points of 30 Possible

A little firm but draw is perfect.  Lots of smoke.  On the dry side.  Except for one prominent vein, it is an absolutely beautiful cigar.  The vein is just a small cosmetic flaw and not a construction or smokeable issue.

Flavor: 28 Points of 35 Possible

Light ans spicy for a maduro.  But more smooth than harsh.  There is definitely a warmth to the flavors and aromas.  Not very earthy at all.   It smokes more like a Criollo.  The dryness in the smoke I think is making me drink more than I normally would.  The middle third is giving a little fuller flavor.  It is still light and spicy.   Rich...and Spicy.  Nutmeg....  Going into the last third..it is still a little dry.

Summary

I wrote these notes and review a few weeks before typing them in.  I wanted to think more about this cigar beacause as I read over these notes...it sounds as if I did not enjoy this cigar.  That could not be further from the truth.  THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CIGAR.  It is very well made and it smokes beautifully.  I so wanted to LOVE this cigar.  I really enjoyed it. But I am not in love with it.  I was disappointed more because of my expectations.  I really wanted a dark and earthy cigar.  That is my wheelhouse.  I wanted something closer to the 2013.  That said...I can't  find much fault whatsoever in this cigar except that the smoke was a bit dry on the palate and it just isn't my favorite flavor profile.  The flavor was pretty smooth with nutmeg and spice.  I liked and very much enjoyed this stick.  It is just not the flavor profile I crave for.  This cigar was a "This is a Damn good cigar..."  and I was hoping for and expecting a "OMG I need to sell my wife so I can get a box!!!!"
